Why your logo arrived with a white box

Someone sends you "the logo" and it is a JPG. You drop it onto a coloured header and a white rectangle appears around it. Nothing is broken — the file is doing exactly what it can.

JPG cannot store transparency. The format has three channels: red, green and blue. There is no fourth channel describing how see-through each pixel is. When a designer exports a logo with a transparent background to JPG, the transparency has to become something, and that something is white.

PNG has that fourth channel, called alpha. So does WebP, and so does GIF in a crude one-bit form. That is the whole distinction, and it is why the fix is a format change plus a cut-out rather than an eraser.

Before you do this: ask for the vector

This is the advice most tools will not give you, because it points away from using them.

If your logo was designed professionally, a vector version exists — an .ai, .eps or .svg file. Vectors store shapes as mathematics rather than pixels, so they scale to a billboard without softening, and they export to transparent PNG at any size perfectly.

Ask your designer for the SVG. It takes them thirty seconds and it solves this permanently. Removing the background from a JPG is the right answer when the vector is genuinely gone — the designer has vanished, the agency folded, the files were on a dead laptop. That situation is common, which is why this page exists. But try the easy route first.

What separates a clean cut-out from a rough one

Logos behave differently from photographs. They are usually flat colour with hard edges, which is the easiest case — with two specific traps.

Anti-aliasing, and the halo it leaves

Look closely at the edge of any curve or letter and you will find pixels that are neither logo colour nor background colour, but a blend. That is anti-aliasing, and it is what stops edges looking jagged.

When a logo has been sitting on white, those blend pixels are part logo, part white. Remove the white and the blend remains, so a pale fringe can persist around curves. On a white page you never notice. Place it on navy and a faint white halo appears.

The fix is resolution. A larger source has more blend pixels relative to the shape, so the model can resolve them into genuine partial transparency rather than a hard guess. A 200px logo blown up to 800px will always fringe. A 2000px original will not.

Logos that contain white

If your mark has white inside it — a knocked-out letter, a white centre in a circle, a light highlight — automatic removal may take that too, because it cannot know which white you meant to keep. Check the counters of letters like o, a, e and any enclosed shapes before you use the result.

Where a transparent logo actually earns its keep

  • Website headers that change colour, or have a dark mode.
  • Invoices and letterheads in Word or Google Docs, where a white box over a coloured band looks careless.
  • Email signatures, which render on white or dark depending on the recipient's client.
  • Slide decks, where the logo sits over photographs and gradients.
  • Video overlays and watermarks, which need transparency by definition.
  • Print, where a white rectangle on coloured stock is immediately visible.

Getting the sizes right

Export one large transparent PNG and derive everything from it rather than cutting out repeatedly:

  • Master: the largest clean version you have, kept safe.
  • Website header: roughly twice the display height, so it stays sharp on high-density screens.
  • Favicon: 512 × 512 down to 32 × 32 — though a full logo rarely survives that. See how to make a favicon.
  • Social profile: 400 × 400 minimum, square, with the mark centred.

You need more than one version

Most small businesses have exactly one logo file, and it is the wrong one about half the time. A usable set is small:

  • Full colour on transparent. The default, for light backgrounds.
  • All white on transparent. For dark headers, photo overlays and dark-mode sites. A coloured logo on a dark navy header often becomes unreadable, and no amount of transparency fixes that — you need a different version.
  • All black on transparent. For faxes, stamps, single-colour printing and anywhere colour is unavailable.
  • Icon only. The mark without the wordmark, square. This is what you need for favicons, app icons and social avatars, because a horizontal wordmark shrunk into a square becomes an unreadable smear.

Which files to keep, and where

A practical filing habit that saves repeated crises:

  • Keep the vector (SVG or AI) as the master, even if you cannot open it. Whoever you hire next will be able to.
  • Keep one large transparent PNG — 2000px or more on the long side. Everything else derives from it.
  • Do not keep only small exports. The commonest logo emergency is having nothing above 300px when a printer asks for artwork.
  • Never re-save a PNG through JPG. It destroys the transparency and adds compression artefacts to the edges you worked to clean up.

Store the set somewhere that is not one person's laptop. Logos have a habit of disappearing when a freelancer moves on.

One thing to check before you use it

Put the finished PNG on a dark background and look at it at full size. Every flaw a cut-out can have — fringing, missed white areas, a soft edge that should be sharp — is invisible on white and obvious on black. If it survives that test, it will work anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Will the text stay sharp?
Yes, provided the source is high resolution. Edges on lettering stay crisp because logos are usually flat colour with hard boundaries. A small logo enlarged before cut-out will always look soft.
Can I put it on a dark background after?
Yes, and that is the real test. Place the finished PNG on black and inspect it — any fringing or missed areas that were invisible on white will show up immediately.
Why is there a faint white edge around my logo?
