A little padding helps when your artwork runs right to the edge. Too much shrinks it at 16px.

If you cannot tell what it is at 16px, simplify the artwork — that is the size most people will ever see.

A complete icon set in three steps — free, and private in your browser.
1
Upload your image
A square PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG. A transparent PNG of your logo mark works best.
2
Check it at 16 pixels
Adjust padding, background and rounding until it still reads at tab size.
3
Download the pack
A real multi-size .ico, PNG icons, the Apple touch icon, a manifest and the HTML to paste.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a favicon be?
Design at 512 × 512 and export 32 × 32 and 16 × 16 PNGs plus a 180 × 180 Apple touch icon. Browsers display the tab icon at just 16 pixels, which is the size that should drive your design.
Do I still need a .ico file?
Rarely. Every current browser supports PNG favicons. A .ico is only needed for very old versions of Internet Explorer — but it costs nothing to include, so this tool builds a real multi-resolution one containing 16, 32 and 48 pixel images.
Is this a real .ico or a renamed PNG?
A real one. It is a proper ICO container holding three separate images at 16, 32 and 48 pixels. Renaming a PNG to .ico produces a file that some software will reject.
Can I use my logo as a favicon?
Usually not the whole logo. A wordmark turns to mush at 16 pixels. Take one element — a single letter or symbol — and use that. Crop it square before uploading.
Why is my new favicon not showing?
Favicons are cached very aggressively, sometimes for days and separately from the normal cache. First check the icon URL loads directly in your browser — a wrong file path is a more common cause than caching.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is drawn and encoded on your own device, and no file is sent to a server.
