Image size requirements

Specifications that somebody else set and you have to meet exactly. Each page below gives the requirement in full, says where it comes from, and opens a tool already set to it.

Requirements change. Where a page covers an official specification, check it against the current source before you rely on it — every one of these pages links to that source.

Identity documents

Passport, visa and ID photograph specifications.

Profile and social images

Dimensions the platforms expect.

File size limits

When the constraint is kilobytes rather than pixels.

Why these requirements are so often unclear

Most upload forms enforce several rules at once — pixel dimensions, file size, format, sometimes a minimum as well as a maximum — and then report only the first one that fails. So you fix the file size, resubmit, and discover a dimension rule nobody mentioned. Read the full specification before you start, not after the first rejection.

The order that saves the most time

  1. Crop to the required framing first. For an ID photo this is where head height and positioning get decided, and it is the step that cannot be automated away.
  2. Resize to the required pixel dimensions. Exactly, not approximately — validators are literal.
  3. Convert to the required format if it is not already in it.
  4. Compress to the required file size last. Doing this first means redoing it after every later step.

The compression targets above are the final step in that sequence, not the first.
